About MEG’s Edible Landscapes
MEG’s Edible Landscapes is dedicated to helping you grow food—even edible flowers! We make it super easy for you to have a successful experience in growing. We’ve taken all the guesswork out of the growing environment and provide a simple way to grow anything edible inside a fabric grow bag. Of course we can’t control mother nature, but with the help of our grow bags, we take as many of the variables as possible out of the equation. You don’t have to worry about plant nutrition, soil structure, or even accessories to help support the plants.
Flower Shops in Northfield MN
MEG’s is located east of Northfield, but delivers and sells at the local farmers market. You’ll find us at the Riverwalk market in downtown Northfield between May and October. We also deliver flowers to Northfield. If you see a black fabric grow bag, you’ll know that it came from MEG’s Edible Landscapes. 2021 was our debut year at the Riverwalk market. Because our grow bags are light and they contain handles they’re easy to move, this makes them an optimal package to sell at the farmers market and the Northfield Riverwalk market.
Flowers
We sell all types of flowers. But the underlying theme of every single flower we sell is that they’re edible! For a list of edible flowers that we currently sell, check out our store online. Last year we started with edible flowers and they were a huge success. We ended up selling out of them. Some of the edible flowers we sold were sunflowers, calendula, pansies, violas, and even hibiscus. Hibiscus is a flowering shrubs plant which is known for its calyx as being used in herbal tea. It’s a tricky plant to grow in Minnesota because it’s a short day plan. However, last year, Minnesota had a beautiful fall that went well into October. We had no problems with our a hibiscus plants flowering.
How we do it
MEG’s sells all of our flowers in fabric grow bags. We also start all of our flowers from seed at the nursery and transplant them to grow bags when they get big enough to do so. We try to utilize local resources to the best of our abilities including compost that’s made here in Minnesota. In fact, we just ordered a 35 yd.³ dump trailer of compost in order to be ready for the 2022 season. As we mentioned earlier, we tried to take all the guesswork out of the growing experience. This means that something as simple as adding fertilizer is not needed by the end-user. We add slow release fertilizer to all of our grow bags which sets them up for success during the growing season.
They’re edible
Did we mention they’re edible? That statement alone sets us apart from every other nursery in the state of Minnesota. We’re the only plant nursery that deals with edible flowers exclusively. We don’t sell just edible flowers but we also sell edible plants including favorites like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and even watermelon! Have you heard of edible flowers before? Many people have, but haven’t seen them up close or applications for their use. Edible flowers are not just beautiful to look at, but they smell great and they are a great addition to many cooking recipes. We like to add the violas to pastries and to ice cube trays. The ice cubes can then be used in summer drinks like lemonade or your favorite summer cocktail.
Benefits of grow bags
Grow bag flowers have a whole bunch of benefits vs. the traditional methods. If you purchase flowers from a florist, you already know that the amount of time you have with those beautiful arrangement is limited. About the time the flowers start to die and the petals drop one by one, that’s the time owners typically wish the flowers lasted longer. With a grow bag, edible flowers have the potential to last all summer long and into the fall. This is a huge benefit to Minnesota gardeners where the growing season is ridiculously short! Not only that, but the grow bags can be moved to different spots of a patio, balcony or porch or even brought inside and put by your window.
The alternatives
Alternatives to edible grow bag flowers include traditional in-ground gardening, raised bed gardening and purchasing flowers from a retail store. There are other types of containers that can hold flowers also, but nothing works as well as grow bags. This is because of the semi-permeable membrane which is really just landscaping fabric sewn into a bag. Terra-cotta pots and plastic pots are two popular options for growing flower plants. There are other variations as well like metal or wood. However, the root zone isn’t as healthy on these pots as they are on a fabric grow bag.
