When can we start eating the lettuce?
MEG’s “Green Towers” Romaine Lettuce Plants may be consumed immediately, because we sell out lettuce grow bags when the plant is beginning its rapid growth phase. This means the plant will be growing in size rapidly after you receive it, and it will grow while you consume the plant.
There are a couple of ways to grow these plants:
Option 1: wait until the plant is fully grown (reaches about 10-12” high) and harvest the whole plant. This will finish the plant, and it will most likely not regrow if cut down to the base of the plant.
Option 2: pull off leaves as needed. We love this option the best because it requires no refrigerator! No wasted produce!
Growth habit
MEG’s “Green Towers” Romaine Lettuce are upright growing lettuce plants. Once these plants get large enough, they start growing vertically. Harvest leaves regularly to encourage more leafy growth. Once the plant produces flowers (also referred to as “bolting”), the plant is essentially done with its leafy green growth phase.
Basic care information for “Green Towers” Romaine Lettuce
Thoroughly saturate the grow bag with water in the morning before the heat of the day arrives. If daytime highs are consistently above 70F, your plant will need to be watered daily. If below 70F, check the grow bag frequently by using the finger method described on the bag tag.
“Green Towers” Romaine is frost tolerant and grows best when temperatures are between 50-70F. During the hotter months, the plant will appreciate some shade during the hottest time of day. East-facing exposure works best for this.
No extra fertilizer is needed with any of MEG’s leafy green plants.
