“Johnny Jump Up” Viola (Viola tricolor)

“Johnny Jump Up” Viola plants develop attractive flowers featuring purple, yellow and white petals. After the plant is well established, it will send up multiple thin stems and develop flowers at the tops. The flowers themselves will unfold to roughly 1”. Violas traditionally have two overlapping petals on the top of the flower, two on the sides and one on the bottom. This is a hardy plant which does well in our Minnesota climate from Spring until Fall.

When to expect flowers

Flowering will start in spring and last into summer. If prolonged hot days arrive, the plant may finish its lifecycle early. We’ve found this flowering plant performs exceptionally well during the Minnesota summers with the plant continuing flowering into the fall. One 3 gallon grow bag can easily produce 75-100+ flowers during its lifecycle in Minnesota.

Growth habit

“Johnny Jump Up” Viola will send up multiple branched stems which will result in multiple flowers. The plant has a compact growth habit and will grow to be about 6-12” tall by the end of the summer.

Basic care information for “Johnny Jump Up” Viola plants

Thoroughly saturate the grow bag with water in the morning before the heat of the day arrives. If daytime highs are consistently above 70F, your plant will need to be watered daily. If below 70F, check the grow bag frequently by using the finger method described on the bag tag.

Pinch off or cut old flowers.

*These plants can take a light frost. Easily move the plants indoors overnight if you’d like to play it safe.
