When to expect harvest
Plants are sold when they’re ready to eat! We recommend not harvesting more than 30% of the plant at one time. Give the plants time to recover after harvest. Rainbow chard tends to grow slower than leaf lettuce, but the wait will be worth it with leaves growing larger than a foot in length!
Growth habit
Rainbow chard has a similar growth pattern to spinach and certain loose-leaf lettuce varieties. Leaves will grow from the inside of the plant. Older leaves will be on the outside of the plants. These leaves may be harvested as needed for meals or a snack.
Basic care information for Rainbow Chard plants
Thoroughly saturate the grow bag with water in the morning before the heat of the day arrives. If daytime highs are consistently above 70F, your plant will need to be watered daily. Check the grow bag frequently by using the finger method described on the bag tag.
Slow-release fertilizer is included in every grow bag of rainbow chard. Use a supplemental fertilizer if you notice the plant’s growth slowing down or leaves become pale. Look for fertilizer labeled for vegetables or use a fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content i.e. fish emulsion.
